Djibouti City (Lamaane.net) – The U.S. Embassy in Djibouti hosted senior Djiboutian government officials, diplomats, senior military officers, business representatives, and civil society guests on Thursday, July 9, to commemorate "Freedom250," marking the 250th anniversary of the United States' Declaration of Independence.
The reception brought together representatives from across Djibouti, with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Abdoulkader Houssein Omar attending as the guest of honor and delivering remarks during the official ceremony. The event highlighted the longstanding partnership between Djibouti and the United States, focusing on cooperation in regional security, economic development, education, and diplomacy.

Addressing attendees, U.S. Ambassador Cynthia Kierscht said the anniversary celebrated not only America's independence but also a long diplomatic tradition dating back to the country's founding. "My country places great importance on our cooperation with Djibouti, a country that, owing to its strategic location between Africa and the Middle East and its strong leadership, plays a vital role in regional stability and global commerce," Ambassador Kierscht said.

She noted that bilateral security cooperation includes joint efforts to safeguard international maritime routes, support peacekeeping operations, and strengthen regional stability in the Horn of Africa. Ambassador Kierscht cited the recent inauguration of the Regional Peacekeeping Center at Camp Maryama, funded by the United States, as a practical example of that partnership. According to officials speaking to Lamaane News Network during the event, the facility is intended to expand training opportunities for Djiboutian forces participating in regional peace support missions.

The ambassador also highlighted educational initiatives, including English-language programs, academic exchanges, and two American Corners operating in Djibouti, including the newest facility at the National Library and Archives in Balbala. She said the programs aim to equip young Djiboutians with skills relevant to an evolving labor market.

Guests gathered under evening lights at the embassy compound, where military officers, diplomats, government officials, and members of the private sector interacted during the formal reception and official presentations held to mark the "Inspire, Ignite, and Innovate" theme.

Economic cooperation featured prominently in the ambassador's remarks. She said Djibouti's ports, logistics infrastructure, and strategic position make it an important regional gateway for trade and investment, adding that encouraging greater participation by American businesses could generate employment and strengthen commercial ties.

Ambassador Kierscht also welcomed Djibouti's decision to join the Artemis Accords, describing the move as an opportunity to expand bilateral cooperation in science, technology, and the peaceful governance of space activities.
