Somalia Says 42 Al-Shabaab Fighters Killed in Hiran

The ministry said the operation took place on Monday evening in Goobo, approximately 10 kilometers north of Mahaas, where members of the armed group had reportedly regrouped after retreating from clashes earlier in the day in the Sullay and Waab-weyn areas. Military officials stated that the strikes also destroyed an armed vehicle, defensive positions, and temporary bases established by the group.

In a statement, the Ministry of Defense said the operation was conducted jointly by the Somali National Army and international security partners supporting Somalia's counterterrorism campaign. The ministry described the strikes as part of continuing efforts to disrupt Al-Shabaab's operational capacity and prevent the group from reorganizing following recent battlefield losses.

"The operation successfully targeted militants attempting to regroup after suffering setbacks during earlier engagements," the ministry said, adding that security forces remain focused on pursuing senior commanders and dismantling the group's remaining positions in the region.

Speaking to Lamaane News Network, a senior security official familiar with the operation said government forces were continuing assessments of the area following the strikes. "The objective was to deny the militants the opportunity to reorganize after withdrawing from previous fighting. Operations remain active, and security assessments are ongoing," the official said, speaking on condition of attribution because he was not authorized to discuss operational details publicly.

Residents in communities near Mahaas reported hearing multiple explosions during the evening, followed by increased military activity in the surrounding area. Local sources said access to some rural roads remained limited as security forces continued operations, although independent verification of conditions in the immediate strike zone was not possible.

The Ministry of Defense also commended the Somali National Army and the Ma'awisley militia—locally organized clan-based fighters who have mobilized to defend their areas against Al-Shabaab with support from the federal government—for their role in the broader military campaign. The ministry also expressed appreciation to Somalia's international partners for their continued assistance in counterterrorism operations.

Hiran has remained one of the principal theaters of Somalia's military campaign against Al-Shabaab, with government forces conducting sustained operations alongside Ma'awisley militia in recent months. The federal government says these operations are intended to weaken the group's command structure, reduce its ability to launch attacks, and improve security across central Somalia.

Military officers said the operation is part of a broader effort to deny Al-Shabaab safe havens by combining battlefield advances with targeted airstrikes against retreating and regrouping militants.

EU Report Finds $39.7M Value in Somalia Sesame Industry

https://lamaane.net/articles/376/EU-Report-Finds-397M-Value-in-Somalia-Sesame-Industry

The study, conducted by an international and Somali team of experts under the VCA4D initiative implemented by Agrinatura in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, examined the country's sesame industry across its economic, social and environmental dimensions.

Researchers carried out field missions in Mogadishu, Jowhar and Baidoa between late 2025 and early 2026, interviewing farmers, traders, exporters, processors, cooperatives, government officials and financial institutions while also conducting focus group discussions and field observations.

According to the report, Somalia produces an estimated 34,000 metric tonnes of sesame annually from approximately 75,700 hectares, with about 80 percent of production concentrated in Lower and Middle Shabelle. The analysis estimates that the value chain contributes around US$39.7 million in direct and indirect value added, representing roughly 0.3 percent of Somalia's GDP, while maintaining a positive contribution to export earnings.

Researchers found that sesame production remains profitable across the value chain but noted substantial disparities in income distribution. The report states that fewer than two percent of value chain actors capture about half of total profits, whereas most smallholder farmers receive comparatively modest returns despite remaining central to production.

Employment is concentrated primarily in oil milling activities, and producers continue to face risks from climate variability, weak infrastructure, limited access to agricultural inputs and institutional constraints.

Field observations documented interviews with government representatives, farmer groups, women's organisations, exporters, processors and youth participants. Focus group discussions examined issues including water availability, soil fertility, climate variability, working conditions, gender participation and household resilience. Site visits also included sesame processing facilities and milling operations to verify information collected during interviews. Lamaane News Network reviewed the study, which notes that these findings were cross-checked through multiple research methods during the field missions.

The report also identifies persistent social and environmental challenges affecting the sector. Women remain heavily engaged in labour-intensive activities but have limited access to land ownership, finance and decision-making, according to the analysis.

Researchers further highlight deteriorating irrigation systems, inefficient water management, limited crop diversity, inadequate soil fertility management and unsafe pesticide handling as significant constraints affecting productivity and resilience.

The study concludes that strengthening irrigation infrastructure, improving seed systems, expanding farmer training, promoting safer agricultural practices and enhancing coordination among public institutions and private-sector stakeholders would improve the competitiveness and sustainability of Somalia's sesame industry.

Researchers also state that addressing broader governance, infrastructure and institutional challenges will be essential for the sector to contribute more effectively to inclusive economic development and export growth.

Somalia: SNA Advances Near Sablale as AUSSOM Provides Backing

https://lamaane.net/articles/375/Somalia-SNA-Advances-Near-Sablale-as-AUSSOM-Provides-Backing

Colonel Abdirahman Elmi Jimale, commander of the 6th Brigade of the Somali National Army's 60th Division, said the operation began at 4:00 a.m., with government forces launching coordinated assaults from multiple directions against Al-Shabaab positions located along the outskirts of Sablale district. According to the commander, troops secured several bridges near the district after armed group fighters withdrew from the targeted locations.

"The operation achieved its planned objectives, and our forces are continuing to pursue Al-Shabaab elements," Colonel Jimale said. He added that government troops remain approximately 10 kilometers from Sablale and intend to continue their advance. "We are not turning back, and we are working to take control of the town," he said.

Military officials said the Somali National Army conducted the operation backed by the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), which has been providing operational assistance to Somali security forces in ongoing campaigns against Al-Shabaab across several regions of the country.

According to Colonel Jimale, no direct exchange of fire was reported between Somali government forces and Al-Shabaab during the advance. He said the armed group retreated from the targeted positions before government troops consolidated control of the bridge crossings, allowing the operation to proceed without prolonged combat.

Residents in surrounding rural areas reported seeing military vehicles and troop movements before sunrise, with activity concentrated along roads leading toward Sablale.

Local community members said movement through some sections of the area remained restricted as security forces continued clearing operations and assessed the security situation around the newly secured positions. Lamaane News Network was informed by local contacts that military activity remained ongoing later in the day.

Sablale district has long been regarded as one of Al-Shabaab's principal strongholds in Lower Shabelle, giving the area strategic importance because of its road network and access routes connecting surrounding communities. Somali government forces have intensified military operations in the region as part of broader efforts to reclaim territory held by the armed group and expand state authority.

Security analysts say control of key transport infrastructure, including bridges and road corridors around Sablale, could improve military mobility and logistics for future operations if government forces maintain their positions.

Military officials said the operation is part of an ongoing campaign to increase government control in southern Somalia, with the Somali National Army carrying out the offensive backed by AUSSOM against Al-Shabaab positions.

Somalia Says 26 Al-Shabaab Fighters Killed in Airstrikes in Middle Shabelle

https://lamaane.net/articles/374/Somalia-Says-26-Al-Shabaab-Fighters-Killed-in-Airstrikes-in-Middle-Shabelle

The ministry said the operation targeted locations where Al-Shabaab members were gathered and formed part of ongoing military efforts to disrupt the group's operational capacity. According to the statement, the strikes also destroyed a Toyota Land Cruiser pickup, commonly referred to in Somalia as a "Abdi-bile," and a fuel tanker that authorities said the group used to support its movements and terrorist activities.

"The operations are part of the continuous efforts by the Somali National Army to pursue Al-Shabaab leaders and fighters and weaken their ability to organize and carry out terrorist attacks," the Ministry of Defence said in the statement released on Sunday.

The government also expressed appreciation to Somalia's international security partners for their continued support in counterterrorism operations. "The Ministry of Defence extends its gratitude to the international partners working alongside Somalia in the fight against terrorism and its eradication," the statement added.

Lamaane News Network could not independently verify the casualty figures or the reported destruction of equipment. Al-Shabaab had not publicly commented on the government's claims at the time of publication, and no independent assessments of the operation were immediately available.

The reported strikes occurred in Middle Shabelle, a region that has remained a focal point of military operations against Al-Shabaab because of its strategic location and the group's continued presence in rural areas. Somali government forces, often operating with support from international partners, have intensified air and ground operations in recent years as part of a broader campaign to reduce the group's freedom of movement and disrupt its logistics networks.

Security analysts say air operations targeting vehicles, fuel supplies and assembly points are intended to limit the group's mobility and operational planning, although the longer-term impact of individual strikes is often difficult to assess without independent verification from the ground.

The Ministry of Defence and the Somali National Army said they would continue operations targeting Al-Shabaab commanders and fighters until the group no longer poses a security threat to civilians.

Officials said the operation forms part of a broader military strategy aimed at degrading Al-Shabaab's operational capabilities through sustained action supported by international partners.

Somalia: Danab Commandos Conduct Operation Near Burhakaba

https://lamaane.net/articles/372/Somalia-Danab-Commandos-Conduct-Operation-Near-Burhakaba

The operation was conducted in the villages of Besiqow, Salan Marode, Habar Gare, and Awbariyow, where Danab commandos carried out security patrols and searches aimed at enhancing public safety and preventing Al-Shabaab fighters from operating in the area. Military officials said the mission was intended to reinforce security in rural communities that remain vulnerable to insurgent activity.

Officers from the 165th Battalion said the operation forms part of the Somali National Army's continuing campaign to expand security, stabilize liberated areas, and protect civilians across Bay region. They added that the commandos will maintain pressure on Al-Shabaab through sustained field operations.

"Our forces will continue conducting operations to secure local communities and deny Al-Shabaab the ability to threaten civilians," an officer from the 165th Battalion told Lamaane News Network. The officer also urged residents to cooperate with security forces by reporting suspicious activities that could undermine local stability.

Residents in the targeted villages observed Danab commandos moving through populated areas and surrounding rural locations during the operation. Security personnel carried out routine inspections before continuing patrols across the designated areas, with local movement continuing under military supervision.

The latest operation comes as Somali security forces intensify counterinsurgency efforts across southern Somalia, where Al-Shabaab continues to stage attacks despite sustained military pressure. Bay region remains strategically important because it links several population centers and transportation routes that are vital for government administration and civilian movement.

Security analysts say regular security operations in rural districts help limit insurgent mobility, strengthen government presence, and improve conditions for humanitarian access and local governance. Such operations are regarded as an important component of Somalia's broader campaign to restore stability in areas affected by the insurgency.

Military officials said similar operations will continue in coordination with other Somali National Army units operating across Bay region. They reiterated that cooperation between local communities and security forces remains essential to sustaining security gains and preventing the return of militant activity.

Somali PM Lays Foundation Stone for Trade Ministry HQ Reconstruction

https://lamaane.net/articles/367/Somali-PM-Lays-Foundation-Stone-for-Trade-Ministry-HQ-Reconstruction

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, Barre said the Ministry of Commerce and Industry plays a central role in expanding trade, promoting domestic production, encouraging investment, and creating a more transparent business environment. Government officials, ministry staff, and invited guests attended the event, which marked the formal launch of the redevelopment project at the ministry's long-standing headquarters.

"The ministry's headquarters has stood for nearly 50 years and has shown clear signs of deterioration. Rebuilding it is an important step," Barre said during remarks delivered at the ceremony. He added that the ministry serves as "one of the backbone institutions of the nation" and acts as a gateway for commerce and industrial development.

The prime minister said the reconstruction forms part of the Federal Government's broader effort to modernize national institutions and improve the infrastructure supporting public services. He stated that strengthening government facilities is intended to improve institutional efficiency, expand opportunities for business activity, and create a more attractive climate for domestic and foreign investment.

"Our country is moving toward development and increased production," Barre said. "We expect to see more factories established in Somalia by Somali entrepreneurs as well as foreign investors in the near future."

Officials at the ceremony observed that the existing ministry building had experienced decades of wear, with the redevelopment expected to provide improved office space and administrative capacity for staff responsible for trade policy, industrial development, and investment facilitation. Attendees gathered around the construction site as engineers and project representatives outlined initial preparations before work begins.

Minister of Commerce and Industry Jamal Mohamed Hassan received praise from the prime minister for advancing the reconstruction initiative. Barre described the project as an important investment in strengthening the ministry's institutional capacity and improving services provided to businesses and the public.

A government official who briefed Lamaane News Network during the event said the reconstruction reflects the administration's wider program to upgrade state infrastructure supporting economic governance. The official said improved institutional facilities are expected to contribute to more efficient public administration and better engagement with investors.

The redevelopment comes as Somalia continues efforts to expand economic activity, attract private investment, and strengthen public institutions after years of reconstruction. Government officials have increasingly emphasized infrastructure modernization as part of broader economic reforms aimed at supporting sustainable growth, improving investor confidence, and expanding opportunities for the country's productive sectors.

The reception brought together representatives from across Djibouti, with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Abdoulkader Houssein Omar attending as the guest of honor and delivering remarks during the official ceremony. The event highlighted the longstanding partnership between Djibouti and the United States, focusing on cooperation in regional security, economic development, education, and diplomacy.

Addressing attendees, U.S. Ambassador Cynthia Kierscht said the anniversary celebrated not only America's independence but also a long diplomatic tradition dating back to the country's founding. "My country places great importance on our cooperation with Djibouti, a country that, owing to its strategic location between Africa and the Middle East and its strong leadership, plays a vital role in regional stability and global commerce," Ambassador Kierscht said.

She noted that bilateral security cooperation includes joint efforts to safeguard international maritime routes, support peacekeeping operations, and strengthen regional stability in the Horn of Africa. Ambassador Kierscht cited the recent inauguration of the Regional Peacekeeping Center at Camp Maryama, funded by the United States, as a practical example of that partnership. According to officials speaking to Lamaane News Network during the event, the facility is intended to expand training opportunities for Djiboutian forces participating in regional peace support missions.

The ambassador also highlighted educational initiatives, including English-language programs, academic exchanges, and two American Corners operating in Djibouti, including the newest facility at the National Library and Archives in Balbala. She said the programs aim to equip young Djiboutians with skills relevant to an evolving labor market.

Guests gathered under evening lights at the embassy compound, where military officers, diplomats, government officials, and members of the private sector interacted during the formal reception and official presentations held to mark the "Inspire, Ignite, and Innovate" theme.

Economic cooperation featured prominently in the ambassador's remarks. She said Djibouti's ports, logistics infrastructure, and strategic position make it an important regional gateway for trade and investment, adding that encouraging greater participation by American businesses could generate employment and strengthen commercial ties.

Ambassador Kierscht also welcomed Djibouti's decision to join the Artemis Accords, describing the move as an opportunity to expand bilateral cooperation in science, technology, and the peaceful governance of space activities.

During the tour, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud praised the quality of the reconstruction and commended the brigade's leadership and personnel for fulfilling their constitutional responsibility of securing Villa Somalia and safeguarding senior state officials since assuming the mission following the withdrawal of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) from those duties.

The event was organized by officers of the 33rd Brigade and brought together Somali commandos participating in the training program. Soldiers conducted a disciplined parade and formation display at the training facility, where Somali flags were raised in recognition of the national occasion. The ceremony highlighted military discipline and cohesion among troops preparing for future operational deployment.

Brigade Commander , Col. Mohamed Ahmed Abdi, said the occasion underscored the importance of national identity and service within the armed forces. "Independence Day reminds every Somali soldier of the responsibility to defend the sovereignty and unity of the nation," he said during remarks delivered at the ceremony.

Military instructors overseeing the training program noted that the event formed part of routine morale-building activities integrated into the commando course. They emphasized that such observances are intended to strengthen unity, discipline, and commitment among trainees undergoing advanced instruction abroad.

A participating soldier said the commemoration carried strong emotional significance for troops away from home. "Even while training abroad, we remain connected to our country and the meaning of this day," he said, speaking on condition of anonymity as a serving member of the unit.

The Gorgor Commandos are currently engaged in advanced tactical and operational training in Türkiye under a bilateral defense cooperation framework between Somalia and Türkiye. The program focuses on improving combat readiness, leadership capacity, and specialized infantry skills.

Upon completion of the training cycle, the troops are expected to return to Somalia and be integrated into frontline units supporting ongoing security operations against Al-Shabaab militants in various regions of the country. Security officials say the Gorgor units play a central role in Somalia's counter-insurgency strategy.

Somalia Says 27 Al-Shabaab Fighters Killed

According to a ministry press statement issued on Thursday, the coordinated strikes killed 27 suspected Al-Shabaab fighters and wounded dozens of others. The ministry said the operation also destroyed military vehicles, weapons, ammunition stockpiles and operational positions that it alleged the armed group had been using to organize and carry out attacks.

"The strikes were conducted against confirmed militant positions following operational assessments," the Ministry of Defense said in its statement, adding that the operation formed part of ongoing efforts to disrupt Al-Shabaab's command structure and operational capabilities in Lower Shabelle.

The ministry expressed appreciation to Somalia's international security partners for their continued support in counterterrorism operations, saying the cooperation has strengthened the country's campaign against the militant group. Officials did not identify the international partners involved in the operation or provide additional details on the air assets used.

A senior defense official, speaking to Lamaane News Network on condition of attribution because they were not authorized to publicly discuss operational matters beyond the official statement, said post-strike assessments were continuing to verify the extent of the damage and determine whether additional militant infrastructure had been affected.

Residents in parts of Lower Shabelle reported hearing multiple explosions over two consecutive days, although independent verification of the government's casualty figures was not immediately available. No information was released regarding civilian casualties, and the Ministry of Defense did not indicate whether any government forces were injured during the operation.

The strikes come as Somali security forces continue military operations aimed at weakening Al-Shabaab's presence across southern and central Somalia. Lower Shabelle has remained one of the group's longstanding areas of activity because of its strategic road networks and proximity to the capital, Mogadishu, making it a frequent focus of security operations.

Somalia's federal government has intensified joint operations with international partners in recent years, combining ground offensives with precision airstrikes intended to disrupt militant logistics, leadership and planning networks. Military officials have maintained that sustained pressure is necessary to reduce the group's ability to launch attacks against civilians, security forces and government institutions.

The Ministry of Defense said operations targeting Al-Shabaab commanders and fighters would continue as part of the federal government's broader campaign to counter the group's activities across Somalia. The reported casualty figures have not been independently verified.

We will honor remarkable individuals whose dedication, sacrifice, leadership, and service have positively impacted Somali communities and contributed to the development of our people and nation. Their stories deserve recognition and celebration," Gaashaan said.

Event organizers said the ceremony will introduce new award categories, broaden international participation, and include special tributes recognizing individuals whose work has transformed lives across Somali communities worldwide. Speaking to Lamaane News Network, officials said planning efforts are already underway to accommodate a larger number of guests and honorees than in previous years.

Organizers said the annual gathering has evolved beyond a recognition ceremony into a forum that strengthens connections among Somali communities across continents.

Somaliland: Muse Bihi Rejects Israel Recognition Claim, Slams Abdirahman Irro

https://lamaane.net/articles/351/Somaliland-Muse-Bihi-Rejects-Israel-Recognition-Claim-Slams-Abdirahman-Irro

In a statement published on his official Facebook page on Thursday, Bihi responded to remarks he said Irro made during a meeting of the central committee of his political party. Bihi rejected claims that he had previously stated Somaliland had secured recognition from Guinea and Ethiopia, saying he had never declared that either country had formally recognized the administration.

"I have never said I obtained recognition from any government," Bihi wrote, accusing Abdirahman Irro of making false claims about his previous statements. He said recognition remains a primary objective for the self-declared Somaliland administration but insisted any development relating to that goal should be handled with caution and broad consultation to avoid creating political divisions.

Quoting remarks he said he delivered at the presidential palace in Hargeisa after reports of international recognition emerged, Bihi stated that recognition was important but should be assessed from multiple perspectives before political leaders reached a collective position. He also alleged that the presidency edited his speech before releasing it publicly and removed remarks delivered during the same event by former self-declared Somaliland administration President Dahir Rayale Kahin.

Muse Bihi further criticized Irro's conduct of foreign affairs, alleging that the current president had previously visited Israel without publicly disclosing the trip at the time. He claimed Irro later acknowledged making what he described as a secret visit, arguing that such an approach represented an unprecedented level of secrecy by a leader of the self-declared Somaliland administration.

The former president also questioned the handling of Irro's most recent overseas travel, saying the president spent several days in the United Arab Emirates before departing separately from members of his ministerial delegation, whom he said remained in Ethiopia before leaving independently. "Mr. President, what explains the secrecy and the separation?" Bihi asked in his statement.

Status of "Somaliland" in Northwestern Somalia

The entity calling itself "Somaliland" located in the northwestern region of Somalia, declared unilateral separation from Somalia in 1991 following the collapse of the central government of Somalia. It has since established its own governing institutions and administrative structures.

Despite its internal political arrangements, it remains unrecognized by any United Nations member state. The Federal Government of Somalia continues to assert sovereignty over the entire territory of the country, including the northwestern region where the separatist administration operates.

Most international institutions maintain recognition of Somalia's territorial integrity within its federal framework. Within the northwestern region, seven major clans are widely reported to reside there, with six of them generally supporting national unity and opposing separatism, while one clan forms the primary support base of the separatist administration. Members of these communities, including those from the separatist clan, are also represented across federal institutions, including both houses of Parliament, the Judiciary, and other branches of the Federal Government of Somalia.

These institutional and social linkages reflect continued integration within Somalia's national framework. Efforts toward unity, reconciliation, and state-building remain central to Somalia's political process, with successive administrations emphasizing inclusive governance, power-sharing, and the strengthening of federal institutions as key pillars for long-term stability, national cohesion, and sovereignty.

Regional Significance

The Horn of Africa remains a strategically sensitive region marked by overlapping political, security, and economic challenges, including counterterrorism operations, maritime security concerns, and regional geopolitical competition.

Diplomatic analysts note that engagement with entities claiming independence within internationally recognized states often triggers broader disputes over recognition and sovereignty principles.

A regional affairs analyst based in East Africa, speaking generally, said such developments "test the balance between diplomatic engagement and respect for established international borders," particularly in fragile or post-conflict states.

Broader international concerns have been raised regarding geopolitical stability in the Horn of Africa, a region located along critical global maritime corridors. The Red Sea and Gulf of Aden continue to play a vital role in international trade and energy transportation routes.

Maintaining Somalia's territorial integrity is widely viewed as essential for sustaining regional stability and reinforcing international legal principles that uphold state sovereignty.

South Sudan Parliament Approves Peace Deal Amendments

https://lamaane.net/articles/349/South-Sudan-Parliament-Approves-Peace-Deal-Amendments

Oliver Mori Benjamin, caretaker chairperson of the parliament's Information Committee, said the amendments were designed to accelerate election preparations across institutions.

"The two main provisions amended concern the population census and the permanent constitution-making process. These have been deferred until after the elections and will be undertaken by the elected government," he said.

"This resolution now allows the National Elections Commission and political parties to speed up their activities in preparation for the elections," he added.

However, opposition lawmakers in the Transitional National Legislature questioned the legality of the amendments, arguing that key benchmarks under the peace agreement remain unfulfilled. The National Elections Commission has confirmed December 22, 2026, as the official polling date, setting a timeline that institutions are now working toward amid political disagreement.

The elections, repeatedly delayed since 2015, are tied to provisions of the Revitalized Peace Agreement requiring a national census, constitutional drafting process, and unified security arrangements. Officials argue that deferring census and constitution-making until after polls removes procedural bottlenecks, though critics warn that unresolved security reforms and fragmented forces could still affect implementation.

The parliamentary chamber in Juba witnessed active deliberations as lawmakers reviewed the amendments under tight procedural sessions, reflecting the political sensitivity surrounding the transition framework. Security presence around the legislative complex remained visible as discussions continued, underscoring the stakes attached to the electoral roadmap.

The amendments mark a critical institutional shift aimed at prioritizing electoral timelines over foundational state-building benchmarks. According to reporting from Lamaane News Network, the decision reflects growing pressure on transitional authorities to deliver elections amid regional and international scrutiny of the peace process's slow implementation.

Attention now turns to voter registration, voter roll publication, and logistical readiness, which officials say could be completed within months if implementation proceeds without disruption. The credibility of the December 2026 vote is expected to depend on progress in security coordination and sustained political consensus among signatories to the peace agreement.

Ghana Inflation Rises to 5.3% in June Amid Price Pressures

https://lamaane.net/articles/348/Ghana-Inflation-Rises-to-53-in-June-Amid-Price-Pressures

The Ghana Statistical Service said the latest inflation reading marks the third consecutive monthly increase, indicating a gradual reversal in the country's recent disinflation trend.

Officials attributed the uptick primarily to rising service-related costs rather than food price shocks, with locally produced goods accounting for more than 86% of the overall inflation movement.

Government Statistician Alhassan Iddrisu, addressing journalists at the briefing, said: "The recent increase deserves close attention to safeguard the gains achieved."

The announcement comes as traders and consumers in Accra report visible price adjustments in public transport fares, school-related expenses, and rental housing costs. At the Kaneshie market transport hub, drivers were observed adjusting fare boards in response to higher fuel and maintenance costs, while passengers queued under hot midday conditions, reflecting growing sensitivity to household budget pressures.

A small business owner in the capital's Madina district, Amina Mohammed, said rising operational costs were forcing adjustments in retail pricing. "We are not increasing prices because we want to, but because everything we buy has become more expensive, especially transport and packaging," she said.

Economist Dr. Kwame Boateng, speaking in a separate interview, noted that the inflation uptick reflects structural pressures rather than short-term volatility. "What we are seeing is a service-led inflation adjustment that could persist if cost drivers in transport and housing are not contained," he said.

Ghana's broader economic context remains shaped by its ongoing recovery from a severe fiscal and currency crisis that affected inflation, debt sustainability, and import financing. The country, a major producer of gold, oil, and cocoa, has spent the past year implementing stabilization measures supported by monetary tightening and fiscal consolidation.

The Statistical Service also highlighted that locally produced items contributed the majority share of inflationary pressures, underscoring the domestic nature of current price movements rather than external shocks. The central bank is scheduled to review its monetary policy stance later this month after pausing its easing cycle in May amid concerns over renewed inflation risks.

Market observers in Accra say attention is now focused on whether the recent trend signals a sustained rebound in price pressures or a temporary adjustment phase as Ghana navigates its post-crisis economic stabilization path.

Addressing an international event on artificial intelligence, Guterres said the initiative was established following a decision by the UN General Assembly as part of the follow-up process to the Pact for the Future. He described the newly formed Independent Scientific Panel on AI as a body of 40 distinguished experts drawn from different regions of the world and tasked with narrowing global knowledge gaps surrounding artificial intelligence.

"We are here to present an extremely important UN initiative on artificial intelligence," Guterres said, explaining that the panel is the first fully independent global scientific body dedicated exclusively to assessing AI's impacts across economies and societies. He added that the group's work is intended to help the international community "separate fact from fakes and science from slop" by providing reliable and unbiased analysis of rapidly evolving AI technologies.

Guterres warned that advances in artificial intelligence are outpacing the development of internationally agreed governance frameworks. "AI could be the most powerful engine for development, speeding the world's progress on everything from health and hunger to learning and climate," he said. At the same time, he cautioned that the technology also carries significant risks if deployed without coordinated oversight. "The more AI advances without shared rules, the less say governments and people will have in the outcome. So, our message to governments is simple: do not wait."

Officials and delegates attending the event listened as the Secretary-General outlined the panel's long-term mandate to monitor developments in AI and provide scientific assessments that can inform policy discussions. Lamaane News Network observed that participants remained focused throughout the presentation, with representatives from member states exchanging views following the announcement on the future direction of international AI cooperation.

Guterres also confirmed that the inaugural Global Dialogue on AI Governance will take place in Geneva next week, bringing together governments to discuss international approaches to regulating the technology. He said he intends to present additional proposals aimed at helping countries strengthen institutional capacity to manage AI responsibly and ensure broader access to its benefits.

The announcement comes as governments worldwide continue debating how to balance innovation with safeguards for privacy, security, transparency, and economic development. The UN initiative is expected to contribute scientific expertise to those discussions as policymakers seek common standards for one of the fastest-growing technologies shaping global economies and public institutions.

Libya Presidential Council Split Grows Over Intelligence Chief

https://lamaane.net/articles/346/Libya-Presidential-Council-Split-Grows-Over-Intelligence-Chief

The dispute began when the media office of Presidential Council President Mohamed al-Menfi announced that the council had unanimously approved the appointment of a new intelligence chief during an official meeting, describing the decision as part of the council's constitutional authority to oversee sovereign institutions.

The announcement was quickly challenged by Presidential Council member Moussa al-Koni, who publicly rejected the claim that consensus had been reached. In official letters sent to oversight and financial institutions, al-Koni said the proposed appointment had not been presented to him in accordance with the council's legal procedures and that he had neither reviewed nor endorsed the decision.

"The Presidential Council operates through collective consensus as stipulated in the Libyan Political Agreement," al-Koni said in the correspondence. He argued that any decision issued without the approval of all council members would lack legal validity.

Al-Koni also cautioned government agencies against implementing administrative or financial measures linked to the disputed appointment, particularly any changes affecting the intelligence service's financial authorities. He urged employees of the General Intelligence Service to continue performing their duties under the existing administrative structure until agreed legal procedures were completed, warning that unilateral actions could undermine institutional stability.

The Presidential Council maintained its position, stating that the meeting was conducted in accordance with applicable legal procedures and that all members participated, including through remote communication technology where necessary. The council said the decision reflected the lawful exercise of its responsibilities over sovereign institutions.

The disagreement has expanded beyond the Presidential Council. House of Representatives Speaker Aguila Saleh warned against politicizing security institutions, saying intelligence and other sovereign bodies should remain independent of political disputes because of their central role in protecting national security.

Saleh also argued that appointments to sovereign positions should proceed through recognized legislative mechanisms, reflecting broader differences among Libya's political institutions over constitutional authority during the country's prolonged transitional period.

Political observers say the dispute highlights continuing uncertainty surrounding the distribution of powers between Libya's executive and legislative institutions. The absence of detailed implementing mechanisms for resolving disagreements within the Presidential Council has repeatedly contributed to institutional deadlock since the country's political transition began.

In separate remarks, President Mohamed al-Menfi welcomed a recent U.S. initiative concerning Libya but stressed that any international political proposal should proceed through Libya's constitutional institutions and preserve the roles of both the African Union and the United Nations. He also identified irregular migration as a priority issue requiring coordinated African action because of its security, economic, and humanitarian implications.

Speaking to Lamaane News Network, a Tripoli-based constitutional affairs analyst said the latest disagreement demonstrates that unresolved questions over institutional authority continue to complicate Libya's political transition. The analyst noted that reaching lasting consensus on appointments to sovereign positions will remain essential to strengthening state institutions and advancing preparations for long-awaited national elections.

Klarna Wins $2bn Ruling Against Google in Sweden Court

The Stockholm Patent and Market Court ruled that Google had favoured its own comparison shopping service over PriceRunner across the United Kingdom, Sweden and Denmark between 2008 and 2023, describing the conduct as unlawful in its judgment.

"PriceRunner is considered to have suffered damage as a result of Google having illegally favoured its price comparison service for many years," the court said in its written ruling delivered in Stockholm, where proceedings were held under standard antitrust review procedures involving legal teams and media observers present in the courtroom.

Google said it "doesn't agree with the court's decision" and is reviewing its legal options. The statement followed the ruling issued in Stockholm's Patent and Market Court, where the hearing drew sustained attention from journalists covering European competition law cases involving major technology firms. Court officials maintained procedural order as both parties' legal representatives presented final submissions before judgment was announced.

Klarna chief executive Sebastian Siemiatkowski said in a statement shared with Lamaane News Network that the ruling "supports a healthier, more competitive market for the way people compare products and services." Outside the courtroom, legal analysts and observers noted the case's significance given its scale and the long-running dispute over search ranking practices affecting consumer-facing platforms.

The decision adds to a wider European antitrust record against Google, including a 2017 European Commission penalty of €2.42 billion for favouring its own comparison shopping product. Since then, multiple follow-on damages claims have been initiated by European price comparison firms, many of which remain pending across different jurisdictions as courts assess long-term competitive harm.

The ruling underscores the structural role of search engines in shaping digital markets, particularly in financial comparison services where visibility determines consumer traffic. Industry analysts argue that algorithmic ranking practices can materially influence competition outcomes, raising broader questions about regulatory oversight of platform neutrality and its effects on fintech distribution models across Europe.

The scale of the award is expected to influence ongoing legal strategies among comparison platforms assessing damages claims against major technology firms, while regulators continue to evaluate how dominant search engines affect market access for financial and retail services.

Kenyan police seize 1,150L illicit ethanol in Malaba

Police reported that officers on routine patrol flagged down a black Toyota Voxy, registration number KDQ 972M, which initially failed to comply with stop orders, prompting a chase through sections of Malaba Town.

A police officer at Malaba Police Station, speaking on condition of attribution, said: "The driver ignored signals and sped off. When the pressure increased, he abandoned the vehicle. We recovered the consignment intact."

A roadside trader near Roiko area said: "We saw the vehicle being chased by police sirens. It was moving fast and suddenly stopped before the driver ran into nearby paths."

The Busia–Malaba corridor remains a key transit route for cross-border trade between Kenya and Uganda, and authorities have repeatedly flagged it as vulnerable to smuggling of unregulated alcohol and industrial chemicals. Officials say illicit ethanol often enters informal markets, raising public health and revenue concerns.

According to statements reviewed by Lamaane News Network from local enforcement officials, the seizure reflects ongoing enforcement efforts targeting illegal alcohol supply chains. A county security observer noted that sustained patrols are essential to deter organized networks that exploit transit routes for chemical diversion.

Authorities in Busia County continue to intensify surveillance along key transport corridors amid concerns that illicit ethanol is being diverted into unregulated brewing and industrial misuse. Security analysts link such seizures to broader challenges in monitoring porous border trade points where commercial traffic intersects informal supply chains.

The interception underscores ongoing pressure on enforcement agencies to balance facilitation of legitimate trade with disruption of illegal distribution networks affecting revenue collection and consumer safety and enforcement capacity building efforts.

The recovered vehicle and sealed exhibits remain in custody at Malaba Police Station as investigators pursue ownership records and the identity of the suspect who fled the scene. Officials indicate that forensic verification will determine the origin and intended destination of the seized ethanol.

The National Police Service has reiterated its commitment to sustained patrol operations along the Busia–Malaba corridor to deter similar incidents and strengthen compliance with trade and safety regulations and regional cooperation frameworks.

Zimbabwe Lower House Approves Bill to Extend Presidential Terms

https://lamaane.net/articles/343/Zimbabwe-Lower-House-Approves-Bill-to-Extend-Presidential-Terms

The draft legislation secured the two-thirds majority required for constitutional amendments after 216 of the chamber's 280 members supported the bill, surpassing the 187-vote threshold. The proposal now moves to the Senate, where the governing Zimbabwe African National Union–Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) is widely expected to secure sufficient backing for its passage.

Government supporters said the constitutional changes are intended to improve political continuity, strengthen institutional accountability, and provide additional time for implementing long-term national development priorities. Parliamentary supporters argued during debate that synchronizing electoral timelines would reduce administrative costs and minimize political disruptions associated with frequent national elections.

Opposition lawmakers and civil society organizations, however, criticized the measure, arguing that it would weaken constitutional safeguards designed to limit executive power. Several legislators warned during parliamentary proceedings that delaying scheduled elections could reduce public confidence in democratic institutions and alter the balance established under Zimbabwe's current constitutional framework.

Outside Parliament in Harare, security remained visible but calm as small groups of activists, journalists, and members of the public gathered to monitor developments. Parliamentary proceedings concluded without major disruptions, although observers noted heightened political interest surrounding the vote and its potential constitutional consequences.

A constitutional law lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe said the proposed amendments represent one of the country's most significant governance reforms since the 2013 Constitution came into force. The academic noted that, if enacted, the legislation would alter both presidential term lengths and the timing of national elections, changes that could influence Zimbabwe's political landscape for years.

Lamaane News Network spoke with a Harare resident following the parliamentary vote, who said many citizens are closely following the debate because of its implications for future elections and public trust in democratic institutions. The resident added that opinions remain divided across communities regarding whether the reforms will promote stability or concentrate political authority.

Mnangagwa, 83, assumed office following the military-assisted removal of former President Robert Mugabe in 2017 after decades as one of Mugabe's senior political allies. Supporters within ZANU-PF have publicly advocated extending his leadership for several years, a proposal formally endorsed by the party and later backed by Cabinet earlier this year.

The proposed reforms also include replacing direct presidential elections with selection by lawmakers, a provision that has generated additional political debate.

Similar constitutional changes extending presidential tenure have occurred in several African states over the past decade, prompting continued regional discussion over democratic governance, institutional accountability, and constitutional reform. Senate consideration will determine whether Zimbabwe advances the amendments toward becoming law.

Niger Airport Attack Leaves 13 Dead in Niamey

https://lamaane.net/articles/342/Niger-Airport-Attack-Leaves-13-Dead-in-Niamey

In an official directive circulated to airport stakeholders, the agency instructed all operational units to maintain uninterrupted services while reinforcing security compliance across the airport platform amid heightened alert conditions following the incident.

The directive, signed by Director General Colonel-Major Hamadou Souley Ibrahim, emphasized continuity and discipline across aviation services.

"Activities related to air operations are continuing normally across the entire airport platform," the statement read. It further instructed personnel to "ensure the continuity of services under your respective structures," and warned authorities to "strictly and rigorously observe all security measures," reflecting concerns over potential secondary threats.

According to a government statement reported by Lamaane News Network, 11 members of the security forces and two civilians were killed when armed assailants targeted Diori Hamani International Airport and an adjacent military air base. Authorities said security forces repelled the attack after intense fighting, killing 22 attackers and detaining around 20 suspects for interrogation as operations stabilized.

Residents in nearby districts reported sustained gunfire and intermittent explosions in the early hours of Thursday, prompting temporary traffic restrictions and a visible deployment of armored vehicles and security checkpoints across Niamey. Airport access roads remained partially cordoned off as military units conducted clearance and search operations around sensitive installations, though passenger processing areas were later reopened under reinforced screening procedures.

The incident comes amid a broader escalation of insecurity in Niger's western regions, particularly the Tillabéri zone, where coordinated assaults on military positions have increased pressure on state security forces. Previous attacks on Inates and Banibangou underscored the persistent threat posed by armed groups operating across porous borders in the Sahel, where regional militaries continue counterinsurgency operations under complex terrain and logistical constraints.

Security analysts say the targeting of both civilian aviation infrastructure and adjacent military facilities highlights the strategic value of Niamey's airport as a dual-use hub for defense and humanitarian logistics. The attack underscores ongoing vulnerabilities despite reinforced perimeter defenses, raising questions about coordination between intelligence, airbase security, and civilian aviation management in safeguarding critical infrastructure.

Authorities maintained that full airport operations resumed shortly after the incident under tightened security protocols, with investigations ongoing to determine the planning structure behind the coordinated assault as Niger's security forces remain on elevated alert across strategic installations.

AFC Funds $600M Dangote Fertiliser Expansion in Africa

https://lamaane.net/articles/341/AFC-Funds-600M-Dangote-Fertiliser-Expansion-in-Africa

Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) and Dangote Group have formalised a US$600 million financing facility for Greenview Fertiliser Corp, the fertiliser holding arm of Dangote Group, as part of a broader US$7 billion expansion strategy designed to significantly scale production capacity and strengthen Africa's agricultural input supply chain.

The agreement, announced through institutional statements, reinforces a long-standing financial partnership between the two organisations in large-scale infrastructure and industrial development projects.

According to officials involved in the transaction, the funding will contribute to expanding urea fertiliser production capacity in Nigeria from 3 million metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 9 MTPA, while also supporting the development of a new 3 MTPA fertiliser plant in Ethiopia. The initiative is positioned as a strategic response to persistent supply gaps in fertiliser markets across the continent.

Aliko Dangote, President and Chief Executive of Dangote Industries Limited, described the financing as a continuation of the group's industrial growth strategy.

"This investment marks another important milestone in our long-standing partnership with AFC as we embark on the next phase of Dangote Fertilizer's growth," he said. "Expanding our fertiliser production capacity in Nigeria and developing a new plant in Ethiopia will strengthen Africa's food security, support agricultural productivity, and deepen the continent's industrial base."

AFC President and Chief Executive Officer Samaila Zubairu highlighted the broader demographic and economic pressures driving the investment decision. "The question before Africa is simple: how will we feed 2.5 billion people by 2050?" he said.

He noted that fertiliser consumption levels in Africa remain significantly lower than in Asia, adding that bridging this gap is essential for long-term food security and economic resilience. Lamaane News Network was informed that AFC views the project as part of a wider strategy to recycle capital into transformative industrial developments across the continent.

The expansion comes amid increasing global volatility in agricultural supply chains and rising concerns over food security. Africa holds substantial natural gas reserves and a significant share of uncultivated arable land, yet remains heavily dependent on imported fertiliser inputs, according to sector data cited by officials.

The programme is expected to reshape regional fertiliser trade flows and reduce import dependency while positioning Nigeria and Ethiopia as key production hubs. Analysts say the scale of investment reflects a broader shift toward industrial self-sufficiency in critical agricultural inputs across Africa.

The financing agreement also builds on previous collaborations between AFC and Dangote Group, including syndicated lending arrangements supporting major refinery infrastructure projects, underscoring a continued focus on large-scale industrial financing across the region.

The initiative, running 2025–2030, seeks to generate more than 2.4 million new and upgraded jobs by the end of the decade. Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the plan will combine 3.8 billion dollars in public financing with 7.6 billion dollars in private investment to reduce risk in agriculture, expand infrastructure, and attract large-scale capital into farming and agribusiness.

"We are redefining agriculture as a modern, tech-driven, climate-smart and investment-ready driver of inclusive economic growth, rather than a subsistence-based sector," Kagwe told.

He added that the framework is designed to align public investment with private sector participation, with government spending focused on foundational systems and public goods to unlock commercial expansion. Kagwe also outlined targets to cut imports of staple foods such as rice and maize by 50 percent while increasing agricultural exports by 60 percent.

The announcement came alongside agritech-focused events in Nairobi, including the 12th Agritec Africa International Conference and Exhibition, where mechanisation and innovation featured prominently in policy discussions and demonstrations. Kagwe also presided over presentations of new agricultural machinery partnerships, including tractor technologies introduced through regional distribution networks aimed at improving farm-level productivity.

Exhibition halls at the Kenya International Convention Centre recorded steady attendance throughout the day, with farmers, distributors, and investors assessing mechanised equipment displays and digital farming systems. Organisers reported increased participation from international agribusiness firms, reflecting sustained commercial interest in East Africa's agricultural transformation agenda.

Kenya's agriculture sector remains a central pillar of the national economy, supporting a significant share of employment while continuing to face structural constraints including productivity gaps, climate variability, and reliance on imported staple foods. Policy interventions in recent years have increasingly focused on mechanisation, irrigation expansion, and value chain integration.

The AgriConnect Compact signals a broader shift toward blended public-private financing models intended to mobilise capital beyond traditional state budgets. The success of the programme will depend on execution capacity, infrastructure readiness, and the extent to which smallholder farmers can access and adopt new technologies across diverse regions of the country.

The collision occurred on Mbizi Road near Triangle in Chiredzi district when a Makuku Bus traveling from Chikombedzi to Masvingo entered a railway crossing as a goods train approached. According to a statement issued by National Railways of Zimbabwe spokesperson Andrew Kanambura, the bus driver failed to stop and check for an oncoming train before crossing the tracks, breaching established railway safety regulations.

Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi said the victims included seven adults and two children. The 25 injured passengers were transported to a nearby hospital, where they received medical treatment. Authorities did not immediately release the identities of those killed or provide an update on the condition of those hospitalized.

Emergency personnel, police officers, and railway officials responded to the crash site shortly after the collision. Wreckage from the heavily damaged bus remained scattered near the railway crossing as investigators documented the scene. Traffic in the area was temporarily disrupted as rescue teams assisted survivors and cleared debris from the crossing.

"The collision occurred on Mbizi Road in Triangle, Chiredzi district, when a Makuku Bus travelling from Chikombedzi to Masvingo drove onto the crossing in the path of an oncoming goods train," Kanambura said in the official statement. He added that preliminary findings indicated the driver did not comply with mandatory railway crossing procedures.

Nyathi confirmed that police had opened an investigation into the incident to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash. Officials have not announced whether criminal charges or additional enforcement measures will follow pending the outcome of the inquiry.

The fatal collision comes less than a week after another serious road tragedy in central Zimbabwe, where a minibus carrying schoolchildren caught fire, killing seven people. The succession of deadly transport incidents has renewed public attention on vehicle safety standards, driver compliance with traffic regulations, and emergency preparedness across the country's transport network.

Transport safety experts have long identified railway crossings, particularly those without advanced warning systems or barriers, as areas requiring strict adherence to safety procedures. Officials continue to urge motorists to stop, observe approaching rail traffic, and cross tracks only when it is safe to do so.

A transport official, speaking to Lamaane News Network after the crash, said investigators would examine driver actions, crossing conditions, and operational records as part of the inquiry. Authorities said further information would be released after the investigation progresses.

Ben-Gvir Cancels US Visit After Visa Biometric Demand

https://lamaane.net/articles/338/Ben-Gvir-Cancels-US-Visit-After-Visa-Biometric-Demand

Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir announced the cancellation following communication with US consular authorities, who reportedly informed him that standard visa procedures would require him to appear physically for biometric data collection, according to Israeli media reports. The development effectively halted preparations for the trip, which had been scheduled as a private family visit.

The US Embassy in Jerusalem conveyed that biometric fingerprinting is a mandatory requirement for visa processing, Haaretz reported, noting that the condition applies regardless of the applicant's official status. The report added that the procedural requirement was widely interpreted in Israeli media as signaling hesitation regarding the approval of Ben-Gvir's visa request.

Israeli media outlets also indicated that officials familiar with the matter viewed the development as unusual given Ben-Gvir's senior government position. An Israeli official, speaking on condition of attribution, said the requirement had created "significant diplomatic sensitivity," noting that such procedures are typically routine but can take on political implications in high-profile cases.

A second official source, also speaking under condition of attribution, stated that "the situation has complicated what was intended to be a private visit," adding that discussions between Israeli and US representatives were continuing to clarify procedural expectations. Neither official confirmed whether an appeal or alternative arrangement had been formally requested.

Outside the US Embassy in Jerusalem, routine consular activity continued without visible disruption on Tuesday, with applicants arriving for scheduled visa appointments. Security presence remained standard, and no public demonstrations or official statements were observed at the site during the morning hours.

Ben-Gvir, a controversial figure in Israeli politics, has frequently drawn criticism from international observers over his public statements and policy positions. His political profile has previously been associated with heightened diplomatic scrutiny, particularly in contexts involving foreign engagement and international travel.

The visa-related development comes amid broader scrutiny of travel protocols applied to senior political figures and highlights procedural tensions that can emerge between diplomatic norms and political sensitivities. Analysts note that biometric requirements are standard in US visa processes, yet their application to high-ranking officials can carry symbolic weight in bilateral relations.

A commentary shared with Lamaane News Network by a regional affairs analyst suggested the episode reflects "procedural rigidity intersecting with political perception," emphasizing that administrative requirements can become diplomatically significant when applied to prominent government figures.

The case continues to draw attention in Israeli political and media circles, with further clarification expected from US and Israeli authorities regarding whether the visa application process will proceed under revised arrangements or remain suspended.

Israel Approves National AI Strategy to Boost Tech Power

https://lamaane.net/articles/337/Israel-Approves-National-AI-Strategy-to-Boost-Tech-Power

The decision, adopted during a formal government session, outlines a comprehensive national strategy designed to position Israel among leading global artificial intelligence powers while strengthening technological independence and long-term economic competitiveness across key sectors.

The policy package includes large-scale investments in infrastructure, research and development, workforce training, public sector integration, and international cooperation frameworks. It sets a national target of establishing 100,000 high-performance computing units within Israel to support scientific research, industrial innovation, and startup ecosystems. The plan also includes the development of a national quantum computing system based on domestic expertise and technologies.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the initiative aims to secure Israel's position in the global technological race, describing artificial intelligence as "a real revolution" that will reshape core pillars of society, including the economy, security, health, education, and industry. He stated that Israel intends to transform its innovation capacity into "a global superpower in artificial intelligence," drawing parallels with its earlier advances in cybersecurity.

A senior official involved in the policy framework told Lamaane News Network that the program reflects "a long-term national shift rather than a short-term investment cycle," emphasizing that sustained infrastructure development and talent cultivation are central to its success. The official noted that global competition in artificial intelligence is accelerating and that countries failing to adapt risk falling behind in strategic capabilities.

Erez Eskal, head of Israel's National Artificial Intelligence Directorate, described the decision as a foundational step for the country's future economic and security resilience. He said nations that successfully embed artificial intelligence across governance and industry systems will define the next technological era, adding that Israel must remain at the forefront of that transition through coordinated state-led investment.

The strategy also prioritizes the expansion of international partnerships in advanced technologies, alongside the creation of a national AI institute and specialized accelerator centers focused on applied solutions to domestic and global challenges. Authorities said particular attention will be placed on cybersecurity-oriented AI systems, industrial automation, and emerging risks such as deepfake technologies.

Education and labor market adaptation form another core pillar of the program, with planned investments in training, reskilling, and academic development to prepare the workforce for AI-driven transformation. Officials also aim to integrate artificial intelligence tools more widely into government services to reduce processing times and improve administrative efficiency.

Israel's approach reflects its broader technological policy trajectory, building on established strengths in cybersecurity and high-tech innovation while responding to intensifying global competition in artificial intelligence development.

The policy is expected to have significant geopolitical and economic implications, potentially reinforcing Israel's role as a regional innovation hub while deepening its engagement with global technology alliances and reshaping domestic labor dynamics over the coming decade.

Israel Excluded as US-Iran Memorandum Nears Signing

https://lamaane.net/articles/336/Israel-Excluded-as-US-Iran-Memorandum-Nears-Signing

Israeli media reports indicated that the decision has intensified concerns within Israel's political and security establishment, which says it has not been granted access to the full details of the emerging US-Iran understanding. Channel 12 reported that Israeli officials believe the lack of transparency limits their ability to assess the implications of the agreement before its expected preliminary signing in Switzerland.

An Israeli official, speaking to local broadcasters on condition of attribution, described the situation as "strategically sensitive," noting that Jerusalem remains unable to independently verify key provisions of the draft memorandum. Another diplomatic source familiar with internal discussions said Israeli leadership is "seeking urgent clarification" from Washington over what it views as "unresolved contradictions" in the proposed framework.

Separate reporting by The Wall Street Journal highlighted growing unease in Israel over the trajectory of US-Iran negotiations, particularly amid broader regional instability following months of conflict dynamics referenced by observers. The report suggested that Israeli leadership fears the emerging arrangement could reshape existing deterrence calculations in the Middle East, especially regarding Iran's nuclear program.

The draft memorandum is expected to establish a general framework for a broader negotiating process between Washington and Tehran. According to officials familiar with the process, the agreement is designed to guide more comprehensive talks aimed at addressing Iran's nuclear activities, with an informal target of reaching further understandings within 60 days after the initial signing.

A Western diplomatic source in Switzerland, speaking on background, described heightened activity around the upcoming discussions, noting increased coordination among delegations and tightened security arrangements ahead of Friday's expected engagement. Observers said the atmosphere remains cautious, with delegations avoiding public disclosure of detailed positions.

The developments underscore persistent strategic divergences between the United States and Israel over the pace and structure of engagement with Iran. Analysts suggest that Israel's concerns are linked not only to the content of the memorandum but also to its limited involvement in shaping the early stages of the negotiating framework.

Diplomat News Network assesses that the current phase of negotiations reflects a broader recalibration in US diplomatic priorities, as Washington seeks to establish a structured dialogue mechanism with Tehran while managing allied expectations in the region. The Israeli response highlights continuing friction over transparency and consultation in high-stakes nuclear diplomacy, with potential implications for coordination among key regional partners.

Kenya court holds 3 suspects in cathedral invasion case

Investigators told the court that the suspects are being pursued under the Prevention of Organized Crimes Act and conspiracy provisions of the Penal Code. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is analyzing CCTV footage and digital evidence to establish the sequence of events and identify additional individuals allegedly involved in the coordinated operation. A senior investigating officer told the court: "We require continued detention to complete forensic analysis and to identify additional individuals involved in the planning and execution of this incident."

Defense counsel opposed the application, arguing that continued detention violates the principle of presumption of innocence. The lawyer stated: "The prosecution has not demonstrated sufficient grounds to justify extended custody. Our clients are entitled to due process while investigations continue."

Inside the Kibera Law Courts, security was visibly reinforced, with officers positioned at key entry points as members of the public and relatives gathered outside the compound awaiting proceedings. The suspects appeared composed during the hearing, occasionally consulting with their legal representatives as the ruling was delivered.

The case stems from a June 12 incident in which an estimated 200 boda boda riders allegedly stormed All Saints' Cathedral during a meeting, causing panic, disrupting proceedings, and damaging property. Police responding to the scene reportedly fired warning shots into the air after being overwhelmed by the crowd as order broke down.

A Nairobi-based security analyst told Lamaane News Network that the case highlights emerging concerns over the mobilization of loosely organized groups in urban disruptions, noting that "digital coordination and informal networks are increasingly challenging for law enforcement to track in real time." Authorities also link the suspects to an alleged group identified as "Chini ya Mnazi," which investigators say is under active profiling.

Investigators confirmed that a motorcycle and several mobile phones recovered during arrests are undergoing forensic examination to determine communication patterns and potential links to additional suspects. The matter is scheduled for mention after the expiry of the detention period, as police finalize witness statements and digital forensic reports for further court directions.

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Finance headquarters, brought together senior Sudanese officials and members of the visiting delegation, who outlined preliminary proposals aimed at expanding private sector participation in key productive sectors amid Sudan's ongoing economic recovery efforts.

Discussions also touched on agricultural value chains, mineral processing, and electrical infrastructure development. Observers noted a formal and structured atmosphere, with officials emphasizing investment facilitation and regulatory cooperation, while delegates reviewed briefing documents and project outlines.

Finance Minister Jibril Ibrahim said: "The government is committed to encouraging regional and international investment in productive sectors that strengthen the national economy and enhance export capacity."

He added that priority areas include agricultural expansion, livestock development, mining operations, and energy-related industries, stressing that value addition remains central to improving Sudan's export competitiveness and industrial resilience.

Head of the delegation, Shefqat, said: "We see significant potential in Sudan's agricultural and mineral sectors, and we are particularly interested in establishing projects in gold refining and electrical manufacturing." He noted the group's existing investments across Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

A Khartoum-based economic analyst, speaking to Lamaane News Network on condition of attribution, said foreign investment interest reflects "a gradual return of investor confidence, though operational risks remain significant."

Sudan's economic strategy continues to prioritize revitalization of agriculture and mining as primary drivers of growth, particularly after prolonged disruptions to infrastructure and production capacity. Energy and electrical manufacturing are increasingly viewed as essential to rebuilding supply chains and supporting public services.

The engagement highlights Sudan's efforts to diversify investment partnerships across Asia, the Middle East, and Western markets, as authorities seek to stabilize macroeconomic conditions and expand export revenues.

The departure marked the latest phase of a series of scheduled return flights aimed at assisting migrants who have chosen to return to their countries of origin after unsuccessful attempts to reach Europe across the Mediterranean. Authorities said additional operations are planned through Tuesday as demand for the program continues.

Speaking to local media, the general supervisor of the humanitarian voluntary return project said, "A series of flights has been scheduled from today until next Tuesday for migrants who wish to return to their home countries." He added that Sunday's flight carried 51 migrants, and that another flight scheduled for Tuesday is expected to facilitate the return of 91 additional participants.

At Tunis-Carthage International Airport, groups of migrants were seen completing travel procedures before departure. Officials and humanitarian workers coordinated documentation, transportation, and logistical arrangements as passengers prepared to board. The operation formed part of a broader effort involving government agencies, international partners, and diplomatic missions.

The supervisor stated that 4,735 migrants from sub-Saharan African countries have benefited from the voluntary return program since the first flight was launched on July 7. "Interest in the program remains ongoing," he said, noting that authorities continue to receive applications from individuals seeking assistance to return home.

According to officials, approximately 70 migrants were transported on Sunday from the governorates of Nabeul and Sousse to the voluntary return camp located at Kilometer 21 in the Amra area of Sfax Governorate. The transfer was conducted to complete administrative and logistical procedures ahead of future departures.

The official also said an additional bus has been scheduled for Tuesday to transport migrants from the Greater Tunis area to the Amra camp. The measure comes as authorities continue registering new requests and coordinating with the embassies of the countries concerned.

Lamaane News Network was informed by officials involved in the operation that coordination efforts remain focused on ensuring that return procedures are conducted through established humanitarian mechanisms and in cooperation with relevant international organizations.

The voluntary return program has gained importance amid continuing migration pressures across North Africa, where many migrants seek routes toward Europe.

Tunisian authorities have increasingly emphasized organized return initiatives as part of broader migration management efforts, combining administrative support, transportation assistance, and cooperation with foreign diplomatic missions.
South Africa Deports 2,745 Migrants in One Week

Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber said the repatriations were carried out through ongoing immigration enforcement operations and coordinated return programs involving several neighboring countries. Speaking at a briefing in Pretoria, Schreiber said the figure reflects departures recorded since Ramaphosa addressed concerns over undocumented migration and public safety.

"As of last night, the number we can report is 2,745 repatriations that have come in this period since the president spoke," Schreiber said, noting that the total continues to change as authorities process additional cases.

The operation comes amid renewed anti-immigrant tensions in parts of South Africa, where groups of residents have staged marches demanding stricter immigration controls and calling on undocumented migrants to leave the country by June 30. Authorities have warned that any immigration-related concerns must be addressed through legal channels and not through vigilante action.

In Durban, one of the centers of recent migrant movements, officials coordinated the departure of hundreds of Malawian nationals who had been sheltering in temporary gathering areas. Malawi Consul General Max Biwi said 560 people, including around 200 children, boarded buses on Sunday as part of a voluntary repatriation effort supported by both governments.

"We are working closely with South African authorities to facilitate the safe return of our citizens," Biwi said.

At departure points, families carrying bags, blankets, and personal belongings waited in queues as officials completed registration and travel procedures. Security personnel maintained a visible presence throughout the operation, which continued under clear weather conditions.

Many migrants cited growing fears for their safety following recent incidents of looting, intimidation, and violence targeting foreign nationals. Fortunate Chilenje, a Malawian migrant preparing to return home, said, "I'm relieved we are finally leaving. It's better than living in fear here."

South Africa remains a major destination for migrants seeking employment opportunities in one of Africa's largest economies. According to official statistics, more than three million foreign nationals live in the country, accounting for approximately 5.1 percent of the population. The issue has become increasingly sensitive amid unemployment levels exceeding 30 percent and growing public debate over migration policy.

The latest repatriations highlight the challenge facing South African authorities as they balance immigration enforcement, public security concerns, and regional migration commitments. Analysts say developments in the coming weeks will be closely watched across Southern Africa, particularly as neighboring countries prepare to receive increasing numbers of returning citizens and manage the economic impact of large-scale movements across borders.

Sudan orders universities back to campuses

https://lamaane.net/articles/330/Sudan-orders-universities-back-to-campuses

Authorities said the directive is part of a wider plan to restore state institutions after prolonged conflict, with officials estimating losses in the higher education sector at nearly $3 billion due to widespread damage, looting, and suspension of academic operations across the country. Officials said the measure also targets re-establishing centralized academic administration after years of fragmented operations inside and outside Sudan.

A professor at the University of Khartoum, speaking to Lamaane News Network, described the decision as detached from ground realities, saying many campuses remain heavily damaged and basic services are unstable, making immediate return unsafe for teaching and learning. Students and staff remain dispersed across multiple countries and displacement centers, complicating coordination of examinations and academic calendars.

A senior official at the University of Al-Nilein said logistical and financial constraints make implementation difficult, noting that universities lack operational budgets to repair laboratories, libraries, and lecture halls damaged during the conflict. The official added that emergency reconstruction financing has not yet been secured, increasing uncertainty over the timeline.

Field reports from Khartoum indicate that student housing has suffered extensive destruction, with officials at the national student welfare fund estimating that more than 90 percent of dormitories were looted or structurally damaged, while some facilities have been repurposed as shelters for displaced families. Local observers noted that transportation access to several university districts remains limited due to damaged roads and intermittent insecurity.

A policy divide has emerged within government institutions, with some officials supporting rapid relocation to signal a return to stability, while others warn that strained electricity, water, and supply networks could face severe pressure from sudden population shifts, according to internal assessments. Energy sector officials have separately cautioned that electricity demand spikes in returning urban areas could overwhelm existing infrastructure capacity.

Stakeholders, including university administrators and union representatives, are pressing for a revised timeline that balances reconstruction needs with academic continuity, as negotiations continue between education authorities and government bodies over phased reopening plans and funding allocations. Observers say the outcome will determine the pace of educational recovery in post-conflict Sudan.

Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, presented an update on the Ebola situation in affected Member States, drawing on technical assessments from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and consolidated reporting from national health authorities engaged in containment operations. The discussions formed part of preparations for the forthcoming AU Summit on Ebola to be hosted under Burundi's leadership.

According to information conveyed during the meeting, the AU Commission Chairperson emphasized the importance of coordinated surveillance systems, rapid response mechanisms, and sustained intergovernmental cooperation. President Évariste Ndayishimiye, in his capacity as Chairperson of the AU Assembly, reaffirmed Burundi's commitment to strengthening continental preparedness frameworks and supporting collective action against public health emergencies.

According to the DCI, officers acting on a tip-off established an ambush along the busy highway corridor linking Naivasha with surrounding transport routes, a stretch frequently used by freight vehicles moving between regional markets.

The Scania truck, bearing registration number UBN 042, was stopped during transit and directed to a controlled inspection point where officers conducted a systematic search of the vehicle under operational security procedures.

A detailed inspection of the vehicle revealed three bales of cannabis sativa concealed within the cabin structure and toolbox compartment, suggesting deliberate efforts to evade detection. Investigators identified Musubo, aged 40, as the driver of the truck, and he was taken into custody at the scene without incident as officers secured the vehicle and its contents for evidentiary handling.

Authorities later escorted the truck and recovered substances to Muthaiga Police Station, where the exhibits were logged and prepared for forensic analysis as part of ongoing investigations into possible cross-border trafficking networks. The suspect remains in custody as detectives continue interrogations aimed at establishing the origin, intended destination, and potential collaborators linked to the seized narcotics.

Security officials have repeatedly highlighted the Maai Mahiu–Naivasha highway as a strategic logistics corridor due to its connection to national and regional transport networks, making it a focal point for surveillance operations targeting illicit trade. Increased monitoring of freight movement has been implemented in recent months amid concerns over narcotics trafficking routes passing through Kenya's central transport arteries.

The DCI has intensified intelligence-driven enforcement operations targeting drug smuggling networks operating across East Africa, particularly those exploiting commercial trucking systems for concealment. Law enforcement officials say coordinated inter-agency efforts remain central to intercepting shipments before they reach urban distribution points, with particular emphasis on transit vehicles originating from or transiting through neighboring countries.

The operation underscores continuing challenges faced by regional security agencies in disrupting organized trafficking networks embedded within legitimate transport systems. Kenyan Investigators are now focusing on tracing broader supply chains connected to the seized consignment.
