Djibouti (Lamaane.net) – Djibouti's Minister of Communication, in charge of Posts and Telecommunications, Mohamed Abdoulkader Moussa Helem, met International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Secretary-General, Doreen Bogdan-Martin, in Djibouti on Friday, July 10, to strengthen cooperation on digital transformation, connectivity infrastructure, digital inclusion, and the governance of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence.
The meeting reviewed opportunities to deepen cooperation between Djibouti and the ITU across several strategic priorities as the country advances its digital development agenda. Discussions focused on accelerating digital transformation, expanding connectivity infrastructure, and reducing the digital divide by improving access to digital services for communities across the country.
Officials also examined policy and regulatory challenges associated with emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence. The talks emphasized the importance of promoting AI development within frameworks based on ethics, security, inclusion, and accessibility, reflecting growing international efforts to establish responsible governance for rapidly evolving technologies.
Mohamed Abdoulkader Moussa Helem reaffirmed Djibouti's commitment to maintaining close cooperation with the ITU to support the development of a modern, secure, resilient, and accessible digital ecosystem.
"Digital transformation remains a strategic priority for Djibouti, and our partnership with the ITU is essential to building infrastructure and policies that benefit all citizens," the minister said in remarks released following the meeting.
Doreen Bogdan-Martin said cooperation between governments and international organizations remains vital to expanding meaningful connectivity and ensuring that digital technologies contribute to sustainable development. She highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts to strengthen digital capacity and promote inclusive access to emerging technologies.
A government representative told Lamaane News Network that strengthening the country's digital ecosystem remains central to Djibouti's long-term development strategy, with investments in connectivity and digital services expected to improve innovation, public administration, and economic opportunities.
The meeting forms part of the Djiboutian government's broader vision of positioning digital technology as a key driver of economic growth, innovation, and social inclusion.
