Tharaka Nithi, Kenya (Lamaane.net) - The National Police Service arrested two suspects and seized 280 litres of illicit brew in Kenya's Tharaka Nithi and Machakos counties during coordinated multi-agency enforcement operations.
Police said officers working alongside National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) conducted separate operations targeting the production, possession and distribution of unlawful alcoholic beverages as authorities sustained a nationwide crackdown on illicit alcohol.

In Tharaka Nithi County, officers arrested one suspect after allegedly finding 180 litres of an illicit brew locally known as "Muna.” A separate operation in Machakos County led to the arrest of another suspect who police said was found with 100 litres of illicit brew.

The two seizures brought the combined quantity recovered during the operations to 280 litres. Police said both suspects were placed in custody pending further action in accordance with Kenyan law. Authorities did not immediately disclose their names or specify the locations within the two counties where the arrests were made.

"The operation underscores the multi-agency coordination and proactive enforcement in disrupting the illicit alcohol trade,” the National Police Service said, describing the enforcement campaign as part of efforts to protect communities from harm associated with unregulated alcoholic substances.

Police have increasingly relied on coordination with National Government Administration Officers in enforcement campaigns involving illicit alcohol. The arrangement brings together law enforcement personnel and administrators operating at county and local levels to identify suspected production, storage and distribution points.

The seizures also highlight continuing government efforts to restrict the circulation of alcoholic products produced or distributed outside established regulatory requirements. Unregulated brews can present enforcement and public safety concerns because their production, ingredients and alcohol concentrations may not be subject to formal quality controls.

No injuries or disturbances were reported during the two operations, and police did not provide details about the conditions at the locations where the beverages were recovered. Lamaane News Network could not independently determine how long the seized alcohol had been stored or whether investigators had identified additional people linked to its production or distribution.

Kenyan authorities have periodically conducted operations against illicit alcohol in different parts of the country, combining police enforcement with administrative oversight and regulatory measures. Such operations generally focus on unauthorized production facilities, distribution networks and possession of alcoholic beverages that do not comply with applicable laws.

The latest enforcement activity demonstrates the role of multi-agency cooperation in addressing an illicit trade that can extend from small-scale production to wider distribution within communities.

Police have not announced whether the two arrests have led to broader investigations into suppliers or distribution networks. The suspects remain subject to the legal process, and any criminal liability will be determined through proceedings under Kenyan law as authorities continue operations against illicit alcoholic beverages.
