Marsabit (Lamaane.net) – Kenya Police Service arrested six suspects in Marsabit County on Thursday, July 17, after security officers recovered government relief food allegedly diverted from intended beneficiaries during an operation in the Majengo area of Saku Constituency.
The arrests followed a tip-off from members of the public who reported suspicious activities at a homestead in the Majengo neighborhood, prompting police officers to conduct a search. During the operation, officers recovered 74 bags of rice and 10 bags of beans, each weighing 50 kilograms and marked as Kenya Government relief food, according to local authorities.

Marsabit County Commissioner Stanley Kamande confirmed the arrests, stating that investigators are working to establish how the food supplies left the official distribution chain and whether additional individuals were involved in the suspected diversion. He said the recovered food has been secured as evidence while the suspects remain in police custody pending further investigations.

"The recovery demonstrates the importance of public cooperation with security agencies," Kamande said. "We are committed to ensuring that relief supplies reach vulnerable families as intended, and anyone found interfering with government assistance programs will face the law."

Residents in the area said police vehicles arrived at the homestead late in the evening after receiving information from community members. Some neighbors reported seeing officers loading the recovered food onto trucks under security supervision before transporting it to a government facility for inventory and investigation. No injuries or confrontations were reported during the operation.

A local administrator, speaking to Lamaane News Network after the operation, said authorities have intensified oversight of relief distribution channels following concerns that humanitarian supplies could be vulnerable to theft or diversion before reaching designated recipients. The administrator noted that community reporting played a significant role in the successful recovery.

Government relief food is distributed in parts of northern Kenya, including Marsabit County, to support communities affected by prolonged drought, food insecurity, and other humanitarian challenges. Authorities have repeatedly warned that misappropriation of emergency food assistance undermines public trust and deprives vulnerable households of essential support.

The latest arrests come as Kenyan authorities continue efforts to strengthen accountability in the management of humanitarian supplies through closer monitoring, cooperation with local leaders, and public reporting mechanisms. Analysts say protecting relief distribution systems is essential for maintaining confidence in emergency response programs, particularly in counties where many families depend on government assistance during periods of hardship.

Police said investigations remain ongoing to determine the origin of the recovered food and whether additional suspects or distribution networks may be linked to the alleged diversion. Those arrested are expected to face legal proceedings after investigators complete their inquiries.
