Somali President Offers Condolences to Qatar's Amir in Doha

Doha (Lamaane.net) – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, met the Amir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, at Lusail Palace in Doha on Tuesday, July 14, to convey the condolences of the Federal Government of Somalia following the death of the former Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, accompanied by a Somali delegation, expressed sympathy on behalf of the Government and people of Somalia to the Amir, the Qatari royal family, and the people of Qatar. He reaffirmed Somalia's solidarity with Qatar during the period of national mourning and prayed for the late Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani to be granted eternal peace.

The meeting was held at Lusail Palace under official state protocol, with senior officials from both countries in attendance. The discussions centered on the expression of condolences and the longstanding diplomatic relationship between Somalia and Qatar. The atmosphere reflected the solemn nature of the occasion, with both delegations observing customary diplomatic formalities associated with official condolence visits.

Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani thanked President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for traveling to Doha and for extending Somalia's condolences. The Amir expressed appreciation for the solidarity shown by the Somali government and people, describing the gesture as a reflection of the close friendship between the two countries. He also praised the strong bilateral relations and cooperation that have continued to develop over the years.

A Somali government official accompanying the delegation told Lamaane News Network that the President's visit demonstrated Somalia's commitment to maintaining close diplomatic ties with Qatar during significant national moments. The official said the relationship between the two countries continues to be strengthened through regular high-level engagement and cooperation in areas including development, humanitarian assistance, investment, and regional dialogue.

Somalia and Qatar have maintained close diplomatic relations, supported by frequent exchanges between senior leaders and collaborative initiatives across multiple sectors. Qatar has provided assistance to Somalia in infrastructure, humanitarian programs, and institutional development, contributing to broader efforts aimed at supporting the country's recovery and long-term development objectives.

Nur Wardhere, a Horn of Africa political analyst, told Lamaane News Network that high-level condolence visits often extend beyond symbolic gestures, providing opportunities for leaders to reaffirm bilateral relations and demonstrate continuity in diplomatic engagement during significant national events. He said such exchanges remain an established practice in international diplomacy and contribute to sustaining long-term partnerships between governments.

Both leaders reaffirmed the value of the historic friendship between Somalia and Qatar and expressed their shared commitment to further strengthening bilateral cooperation across areas of common interest, reflecting the continued importance both countries place on their diplomatic partnership.
