Ankara (Lamaane.net) - The 33rd Brigade of the Gorgor Commandos of the Somali National Army, currently undergoing advanced military training in Türkiye, held a ceremony on Wednesday, July 1, to commemorate Somalia's 66th Independence Day.
The event was organized by officers of the 33rd Brigade and brought together Somali commandos participating in the training program. Soldiers conducted a disciplined parade and formation display at the training facility, where Somali flags were raised in recognition of the national occasion. The ceremony highlighted military discipline and cohesion among troops preparing for future operational deployment.
Brigade Commander , Col. Mohamed Ahmed Abdi, said the occasion underscored the importance of national identity and service within the armed forces. "Independence Day reminds every Somali soldier of the responsibility to defend the sovereignty and unity of the nation,” he said during remarks delivered at the ceremony.
Military instructors overseeing the training program noted that the event formed part of routine morale-building activities integrated into the commando course. They emphasized that such observances are intended to strengthen unity, discipline, and commitment among trainees undergoing advanced instruction abroad.
A participating soldier said the commemoration carried strong emotional significance for troops away from home. "Even while training abroad, we remain connected to our country and the meaning of this day,” he said, speaking on condition of anonymity as a serving member of the unit.
The Gorgor Commandos are currently engaged in advanced tactical and operational training in Türkiye under a bilateral defense cooperation framework between Somalia and Türkiye. The program focuses on improving combat readiness, leadership capacity, and specialized infantry skills.
Upon completion of the training cycle, the troops are expected to return to Somalia and be integrated into frontline units supporting ongoing security operations against Al-Shabaab militants in various regions of the country. Security officials say the Gorgor units play a central role in Somalia’s counter-insurgency strategy.
The ceremony concluded with a formal parade review and formation salute, marking the Independence Day observance within the training facility.
