Abudwaq (Lamaane.net) – Community leaders, local authorities, security officials, religious scholars, and representatives from Herale and Abudwaq agreed on Wednesday to implement a ceasefire between the Surre and Marehan communities following a peace conference aimed at reducing tensions and preventing further conflict in Somalia's Galgadud region.
The meeting brought together district officials, police representatives, traditional elders, Islamic clerics, and members of civil society from both areas. Participants endorsed a series of measures requiring the Surre sub-clan of the Dir community in Herale and the Marehan clan of the Darod community in Abudwaq to immediately halt hostilities and respect existing settlement boundaries.

According to the conference communiqué, both sides agreed to remain within their current areas of residence, with neither community permitted to expand into territory occupied or claimed by the other. Organizers described the agreement as an initial confidence-building step intended to support a broader reconciliation process.

"The objective is to preserve peace and create an environment for dialogue between the two clans,” one elder attending the conference said during the closing session. Religious leaders participating in the discussions urged residents to uphold the agreement and avoid actions that could trigger renewed tensions.

The gathering attracted significant community participation, with residents from surrounding areas attending the proceedings. Security personnel maintained order throughout the event as delegates engaged in hours of consultations before announcing the final decisions. Witnesses said discussions were largely constructive, with elders and local officials holding separate consultations to secure consensus on key issues.

The dispute has centered in part on allegations that members of the Surre sub-clan of Dir had expanded settlement activities beyond areas traditionally associated with Herale, including locations near villages situated closer to Abudwaq district. The issue has been a recurring source of tension between the two clans and featured prominently during the negotiations.

Sources involved in the process told Lamaane News Network that the agreements reached during the conference are expected to pave the way for a larger reconciliation meeting involving broader representation from both communities. Preparatory discussions are expected to address long-term conflict resolution mechanisms, resource-sharing arrangements, and community relations.

Inter-clan disputes in Somalia’s central regions have frequently been linked to competition over grazing land, water resources, and settlement patterns. Seasonal droughts and livestock migration have increased pressure on limited resources, contributing to disputes among pastoral communities across several regions.

The latest agreement is expected to provide a framework for de-escalation and dialogue as local leaders seek to prevent future confrontations and strengthen stability between clans in the Galgadud region.
