Brussels (Lamaane.net) - European Commission announced this week a €235 million humanitarian aid package for vulnerable populations across West and Central Africa, targeting conflict-affected and food-insecure communities.
The funding aims to support displaced populations, host communities, and hard-to-reach groups facing overlapping crises across the region. According to the Commission, €75 million will be directed to the Central Sahel, over €72 million to Chad, €33 million to Nigeria, €22 million to the Central African Republic, €16.6 million to Cameroon, and €4.8 million to Mauritania. Coastal countries will receive more than €6 million, with an additional €6.4 million allocated to regional programs.

Hadja Lahbib, European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, said the region is confronting "a storm of humanitarian crises,” citing conflict, poverty, hunger, instability, and climate shocks as key drivers.

"For millions of people, humanitarian aid is not a choice. It is food on the table, clean water, medicine, shelter, and a chance for their children to learn again,” she stated in an official release.

Field officials and humanitarian workers described growing needs on the ground. A regional aid coordinator based in N’Djamena, speaking to Lamaane News Network, reported that camps hosting displaced families in eastern Chad have expanded rapidly in recent months. "You see rows of makeshift shelters stretching beyond capacity, with limited access to water and healthcare,” the coordinator said.

Residents in northern Nigeria echoed similar concerns. A community leader in Borno State, Musa Abdullahi, said food shortages and insecurity continue to disrupt livelihoods. "People depend on assistance because farming is no longer reliable in many areas,” he told local partners.

The humanitarian situation across West and Central Africa has deteriorated amid persistent armed conflict, weak governance structures, and climate-related pressures such as drought and flooding. The Central Sahel and Lake Chad Basin remain epicenters of displacement, with violence spilling into coastal states and straining already limited resources.

Data from humanitarian agencies indicate that millions remain internally displaced or in urgent need of assistance. The ongoing crisis in Sudan has further compounded challenges, particularly in eastern Chad, where cross-border displacement is increasing pressure on infrastructure and services.

Analysts note that the EU’s funding reflects both humanitarian priorities and broader geopolitical interests in stabilizing fragile regions. Sustained aid flows are considered critical to preventing further displacement, mitigating food insecurity, and supporting basic services such as health and education.

The European Commission emphasized its continued role as a "reliable and principled humanitarian partner,” signaling ongoing engagement in one of the world’s most complex crisis zones.
