Porto-Novo (Lamaane.net) – Benin Independent Electoral Commission (CENA) confirmed that Romuald Wadagni won Benin's presidential election in Cotonou on Monday, following the April 12 nationwide vote count official provisional results. The finance minister secured a decisive mandate with more than 94 percent of ballots, according to preliminary tallies that observers described as unassailable.
According to the electoral commission, Wadagni and his running mate secured 4,252,347 votes, while opposition candidate Paul Hounkpè received 269,433 votes, representing 5.95 percent of valid ballots. The commission reported results from 15,814 polling stations out of 17,463, reflecting a 90.55 percent processing rate.

Sacca Lafia, head of the electoral commission, said on national television that the gap was "mathematically irreversible” as more than 90 percent of ballots had been counted. The commission also highlighted the use of a digital transmission platform designed to ensure traceable and rapid reporting of electoral data.

Opposition candidate Paul Hounkpè conceded defeat in a televised statement, congratulating Wadagni and acknowledging the outcome as decisive. He said "To Romuald Wadagni I offer my republican congratulations Democracy requires mutual respect and the ability to rise above partisan divides".

Voter turnout stood at 58.75 percent, with 4,640,354 citizens casting ballots out of 7,897,287 registered voters nationwide. Security officials reported isolated attempts to disrupt voting in northern localities, though operations continued under military and police protection.

The election followed President Patrice Talon's completion of two constitutional terms, after which he stepped down and endorsed Wadagni as his preferred successor. The main opposition party was unable to field a candidate after failing to secure required endorsements under electoral regulations.

The outcome consolidates continuity within Benin's governing coalition, reinforcing institutional stability while limiting competitive pluralism in the immediate political landscape.

Analysts speaking to Lamaane News Network noted that the scale of victory could shape regional diplomatic positioning in West Africa. It also underscores the role of electoral engineering and candidate eligibility rules in shaping competitive dynamics within the country's democratic framework. Regional observers are expected to monitor how the transition influences governance continuity and policy implementation over the coming months.

Attention now shifts to the Constitutional Court, which is expected to validate the provisional results and address any electoral disputes under Benin's legal framework. The final certification process will determine the official status of the landslide victory amid ongoing procedural review.
